April was the Month of Military Child

April was the Month of the Military Child. During this month, we honored the sacrifices made by military children and their parents across the US and the world. In an effort to help military children cope with the unique stresses of having their parent(s) in the armed forces, YAV offered the Military Child Initiative residency program to schools with high military populations. This year’s residencies took place at Shelton Park Elementary School and White Oaks Elementary School in Virginia Beach, and Bay View Elementary School in Norfolk. In these Out of School Time workshops, students learned how express themselves creatively.

Pictured above is the unveiling of the mural at Shelton Park Elementary. The unveiling at White Oaks Elementary will occur on May 8.

The Military Child Initiative residencies were made possible by a generous grant from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. Photo by Lianna Pevar.

May Program Highlights

Norfolk Capture Art

Throughout April and May, middle school students in Norfolk Public Schools art classes learned to identify, develop and understand their personal creative process, leading them to innovative thinking. During the unit on Romare Beardon, YAV Teaching Artists Mannaah Blackwell and Jennifer Gammill helped students draw connections between art and music. Students then translated their impressions and conclusions from the music into a visual artwork inspired by the style of Beardon.

The students’ art will be on display at the MacArthur Center Gallery. Join us for a public gallery opening and reception on May 24 at 5:30 p.m.

Strings Impact

The Strings Impact project provides an introduction to playing the violin to select 5th and 6th graders at Westhaven and Victory Elementary Schools in Portsmouth. In this Out of School Time residency, students learn the basics of how to play the violin, from reading music to how to care for the instrument.

At the Portsmouth All City Orchestra concert on May 18, 2018, students from both Westhaven and Victory will share the stage to perform selections they learned during the course of this program and to demonstrate the skills and techniques to which they have been introduced for their families, friends, and teachers!
